Kids Outing
Salmon Unlimited has participated in yearly Urban Kids Fishing Clinics for over 35 years. As many as 500 kids a year have participated in the program. We have several teachers certified with the State of Wisconsin to teach angling to the kids. Our goal was to help educate our youth on fishing and safety skills while inspiring them to be the next generation of fisherman and appreciate our lakes and streams.
They are taught casting, knot tying, species identification of Wisconsin fish, water safety (with the assistance of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary) while giving kids the chance to catch fish. When given the opportunity, we show them how to bait the hook and assist with unhooking the fish on a one-to-one basis. In past years we have taught how to filet and clean the fish. At the end of each clinic, we give each child a certificate of completion and a small lunch. On many occasions the children have received a small youth fishing rod and reel to keep them interested in fishing.
In past years we have invited the Sweet Water/Root-Pike Watershed Initiative to help educate children on keeping our waterways clean and viable for future generations to enjoy.
